Repair Or Upgrade – Three Things To Consider When Your Garage Door Opener Breaks

by Landon Little

If your garage door opener isn't functioning as it should, now may be the time to upgrade. Below, you will find a short list of features that may entice you to upgrade rather than repair.

Improved Safety

If your garage door opener was made prior to 1993, chances are, it doesn't have the sensors at the base of the garage door that keep the door from crushing anyone or anything that is under it when it closes.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission passed a law in 1993 that required all garage door openers to be equipped with obstruction sensors.

These sensors are positioned along both sides of the garage door track. These sensors create a beam of light that, when broken, prevents the garage door from closing.

Enhanced Security

Older garage door openers are easier to fool than the newer ones. Potential burglars can use small gadgets that copy the signal of your garage door opener remote and provide them with instant access. All that they have to do is drive behind you and when you press the button on your remote, they press a button on theirs. In just seconds, your signal is copied and they have access. Newer models aren't as easy to copy the signals.

Keypad Access

If you don't have a garage door opener with keypad access, you don't know what you're missing. The keypad is installed outside of the garage and requires a short pin code to be inputted. When the correct code is used, the door opens – no more struggling with keys to get the man-door on your garage to open up.

This is an awesome feature for homes with attached garages. Instead of having to deal with teenagers losing house keys, you can teach your teen the code and he or she can have instant access to the home when locked out.

This feature is also nice for those who have cleaning or repair services coming and going through the day when you aren't home. You can assign each company that you trust to access your home with a pin. They use the pin to access your home as you have planned, and when the work is done, you remove the pin from the system and block their ability to re-enter your home.
